Has me a bit confused too, someone has gone to the effort of cutting through the rings and spot welding them back together and yet there are 3 out of 4 screws rattling around??
Why is this, are the threads stripped?
If I'm going to attempt to refit the screws should I just repeat this method rather than use the de-crimping process, is that a reasonable course of action?
Another thought I had is that while the rings are off welding/solder some sort of small fittings so the rings can be held in place with small bolts, something like this;
Solder two of these jewellery fittings either side of the cuts and bend the loops up 90 degrees??
The join could be positioned at 5 o'clock in behind the odometer housing to kinda hide it?
or just spot weld it again?

Highly unlikely they stripped out the face screws. That's a plastic face, they would of burrowed into the plastic before stripping. Looks like a "decal" because of the bubbling on the speedo. I hate decals!! How "NICE" do you want this set?? I have containers full of this stuff not tack-welded or fudged. And if i don't have it i can find it. Just saying because you need the carbs anyway.

Still haven't a clue why person's "cut the crimping ring?? Don't know what your upper lip or lower plastic can diameter is, KZ stuff is approx 103mm. I don't use replacements, just remove the existing if proper and polish/replace. Different designs used different rings of course.

Here is the unsettling reality of decals. Note not all decals are manufactured the same! If doing a speedo with that 45-degree beveled opening for odometer and trip register and wanting to decal it..You're screwed. Can't hope to tuck that decal into the beveled area and even if ya could it's going to lift in time, unsightly!! And the ones from Diablo, former Reproduction Decals are waaay too shiny. If left to no other option i use the decals from "Classic Gauges" or CB750faces" both out of the UK. Ones from Classic have a stiffer backer whereas Diablo are stretchy film. I do a lot of gauges and person's demand excellence so i do the best i can with found bits. Where's Howard, he's a smart cookie!!! He could probably re-screen print the original font!

Hi Clay, it’s a good job that I don’t live near you otherwise you wouldn’t be able to get me out of your shed, and would have to start charging me rent😂😂 toooo many goodies for a petrol head like me👍👍

Have a couple more bikes coming my way shortly. A 1966 Suzuki T250 Hustler and the Holy Grail of the T500 Titans, a 1968. Just never ends...

Rich, those are "other" person's machines. I learned years ago working on one's own stuff doesn't pay, it costs, ha. Sold the last 8 Z's i had years ago. Have accumulated a couple since then but i'd gotten the ones sold back when they were either given to me or never paid more then 300usd per bike. The good old days, before everyone had computers.

Re: Restoring a 1981 Z1000J1 in Australia
26 Mar 2025 15:34Hi Clay How NICE you say? Anything would be better than their current condition, for starters I'm keen to discover if they even work, I haven't started it let alone ridden it so not sure what I'm going to find, po did mention the Tacho worked intermittently (maybe loose wire he said) but I've discovered his word means nought....Highly unlikely they stripped out the face screws.
The diameter over the clamping ring = ~107mm (not sure how tight the ring was squeezed before they spot welded it)
The diameter over the top case = ~100mm (it's in pretty poor shape, you can see where po tried to prise it off the glass)
The diameter over the lower internal case = ~93mm (white main body)
The diameter of the lower outer case = ~106mm (these are a bit beaten up and have been poorly painted)
The stuff you have (in your photos) are from the earlier KZ900, A3, A4, H etc models?
I think for now I'm going to leave them alone until I get the engine rebuilt and on the road and confirm they work then look at my options to restore them.
What I will do though is use EksCelle brilliant "1981 KZ1000 Speedo/Tach Rubber damper alternative"
Thanks again for your sage advice and offers of help, very much appreciated.
