The problem is the hole is not square caused by that cheap tool. The second one would have worked if it was square to the chamber. The Time Serts looked like they had a shoulder but they don't. Not having accurate measurements compounded the problem. The Big Serts do have a shoulder for the gasket to seal on. If I can get the threads to seal the problem will be solved. If not the gasses will burn past them and I will have a bigger problem. The triple Big Sert will be the last chance. Another issue is the cast in valve seat so the insert has to be short enough to miss them and fit flush with the head surface. I will have two two work with.
It all started by relying on the auto parts stores in this Podunk town Desperate Hot Springs. Not finding a known item (M 14 Helicoil kit) and buying a cheap unknown insert kit with no instructions with inserts they don't sell more of. Then having to buy the more expensive kit only to find it is larger, you have to buy parts you don't need and still no instructions.
Once this is over fail or not, I'm going to start another thread on this subject, transfer my clips and comments in the hope others won't have to go through this as I had to. Lots of conflicting information out there leading you into a RAT HOLE.
BTW, Got a reply from Cal Van.
Do you sell a tap and standard M 14 inserts that can be used on a motorcycle head? What is the OD of the inserts you have in stock?
Unfortunately, we do not. The only m14 inserts we have are for the Ford Triton engine. The OD is .75.
Wouldn't have worked anyway.

Sometimes a new head can be cheaper than an old one.

It's a drop in a bucket compared to rebuilding a used head. I have one and will start on it soon. This has been a learning experience for me and it'll give answers found nowhere else.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI have an idea. Input would be appreciated.
The M 16 alternator puller bolt is 15.77mm
The tap is 16.12mm 16.12-15.77=.35mm
Save a Thread insert 16.71mm
Tap 17.12mm 17.12mm-16.71=.41mm
Big Sert 17.77mm
If the 18mm tap is like the 16mm it should be 18.12mm
- .35mm
I'm going to order a M 18 tap and see if I'm right. I can drill and tap a piece of hardwood to see how it fits. I've gone this far so why not?
Steve
Not only are the kits overpriced they have things I'll never use. In the revue at the bottom of the ad it says they're not recommended for washer style plugs.

Steve, here is an idea! leave your head with the time sert in it that leaks. Use this aluminum brazing rod. melts at about 790 degrees. Put this plug non-fouler in the 14mm plug hole. Then get a bottle of yellow propane MAP gas. get it good and hot. And sweat the aluminum weld rod in. Just like sweating a copper plumbing fitting. Cook the bottom of the head below the plug hole. And it might fill all the voids. Then just find a shorter thread plug to use. You can hold the small insert with a wrench when tightening up plugs.
This aluminum brazing rod has been on the forum here before. Plus it is on google of course. You want, I'll send you the non-fouler and a couple pieces of the brazing rod.
