The black wire I detached goes into the harness that the middle plug inserts with all the yellow wires.

I’m sorry I thought the taped up black wire came out of the connector in the red square.

@Mikaw, the taped black wire you just posted comes out of the harness that goes to the green square plug on the bank.

The taped up one goes to a black with yellow. That black yellow goes to the right hand side engine ground.

My apologies Mikaw,
I see what you are seeing.
Yeah, that thin black wire needs to be removed from the relay.

Accepted. I know where the wires go. Your the one that knows how they work. Good team.

Should he ground those wires before you start the bike. I’m not sure what damage could be done to the regulator and the rectifier it they are not grounded?

Yeah, definitely ground it.
We should reconnect anything that is obvious.

thanks guys, appreciate it. So I don't have a black/yellow lead going to the battery ground on the engine, I have some wire and plugs so I can fabricate one.
Once I ground that should I begin getting more voltage measures or try the starter button? @F64

The battery should be grounded to the bolt on the Rh side also.

yes I do see the battery lead is grounded to the engine. So I need to ground the taped wire there and the black wire I removed from the relay I should ground at the seat lock. Correct?
Then give the starter a whirl?

Again, for clarity...

The blue plug on the panel is for your alternator.  It is 3 phase, hence 3 yellow wires.  The greenish plug is for your voltage regulator.  The white plug is for your rectifier.  The brown plug is to tie in everything in the wiring harness.

I thought the KZ900 had an integrated voltage regulator/rectifier but it appears that your bike doesn't.  The panel looks the same as a Z1 to Z1B.

You asked if you could open up the handlebar controls and the answer is yes you can.  There are two M6 screws holding the two halves together.  Simply unscrew them and separate the two halves.  Remove the control from the bars and clean everything up.  You will probably find a cocoon or two inside.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Once you ground that thin black wire that was on the starter relay you can try to see it starts.
It may only run on 2 cylinders as that right side coil is not getting voltage.
