Dutch 1977 Z1000 Build

I agree with SWest on the crankcase breathers. Those fancy low-profile breather covers may look trick, but they don't work like the dual baffle plate breathers that came stock of the KZ1000 motors. In all the years I raced my Kz1000's, I never had any oil be pushed out into my breather hose past the first bend in the hose. I just run the hose out of the breather as high as I can before I route it to the back of the bike. I always ran just a cheap clear hose so I could see if it was pushing any oil out my breather.

Run the breather hose as high as you can right out of the breather.


Like I said, I just run a clear hose to the back of the bike.


Another reason to run your oil cooler hose ends on the bottom of the cooler. You have a lot more room to mount a steering damper!!

Thanks both for the advice and tips.
I will give it a try with the low breather and if it overflows it is an easy fix to put back the stock one.
The only reason I bought one is because it gave me more space and it looked good.
Working on the steering damper at the moment and it might fit.
If it does not work than I will flip the cooler upside down and buy some of the bend couplings the Doctor has :lol: .

First ride went OK.
No leaks and no overheating.
Almost fell over while stopping because my shoestring got stuck on the shift pedal :pinch:





2 more jobs left to do (yeah right :laugh: ).
Disassemble the rear brake and fix a small oil leak at the alternator case.

Just tuning into this build now, and what a ride! You sure do have good taste with this one.

How is the LED light holding out? Does it put off enough light? I'm looking at converting mine over as well. Was it easy to install?

The light gives more output than the standard one and it looks real nice.
Very easy install.
It is the same basic light as the one I had, just take it all apart and put it back together with this LED and it works.

Perfect, that's what I'm looking for. Ease of install and more light. I'm trying to reduce the load on the charging system as well, which would help.

Hello again fellow builders.

6 year after my last post en 8 years after starting this topic, I am back with the last part of my build.
The only finishing thing I had to do left was the decal and paintwork.
The decals I found a couple of months ago in Germany but the paintwork scared me a bit.
I tried it a couple of times but due to several layers of different kind of paint, the results where not hopeful.
So after another try I got these results…………

 

 

 

 

But the paint was cracking up and after 3 tries and a lot of paint and resending I gave up.

 

I managed to save the tail end but had to redo the rest.
Wire brushed the front to bare metal and that seems to be the trick.
